Scientists have finally confirmed what the rest of us have suspected for years: Bacon, cheesecake, and other delicious yet fattening foods may be addictive.
A new study in rats suggests that high-fat, high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin. When rats consume these foods in great enough quantities, it leads to compulsive eating habits that resemble drug addiction, the study found.

well i figure we just havent evolved enough to get used to the abundance of food.

back in the day when ugg was the longest word man knew how to spell, if you found some fatty food, you ate it as fast as you could, you never knew when you could find such a high source of calories again.

eat it while you got it or some other animal will.

but now are bacon comes in packages not made out of pig.
they are protected from other animals.
and we dont have to look for the bacon.. I know where i can find some less than a mile from here and a wide range of varieties.
and we dont have to settle for rat when we really want pig.

It's not addiction, it is survival instinct that is no longer needed.

good point joules, I've also read studies that say because of us eating such fatty food in our cave man days it helped our brains develop into what they are now, seeing as the brain is mostly fat, eating fatty foods may have helped evolve our cerebral processes.

That type of diet was also useful when you would, for example, work in the fields for 12 hours a day...

The Problem is that we Americans don't do Hard Physical labor(or Exercise) anymore to burn off such high-Calorie "Fatty" foods as our ancestors did. And we eat FAR TOO MUCH "Junk/Fast" foods loaded down with Tons of Salt,Sugar or corn Syrup, Chemical Additives,Trans-fats,etc --- Is it ANY WONDER our "Health Care Costs are going into Orbit?!!! We also eat far too much meat(all kinds) & Mindlessly Indulge in our "Vices"(Drinking,Smoking,Other, etc). I adhere to a STRICT MediterraneanDiet, Have 3 Meatless days a week,Eat at regular times & NO Snacks in Between meals. Americans NEED to Eat Healthier or ANY "Health Reform" will go down the porcelainPortal !!! A FREE People Must cultivate the SELF-DISCIPLINE to eschew what "Weighs" them down !!!

I agree with that completely....that's why the "meat and potatoes" diet is outdated....some people need to maintain those diets, but most do so out of habit and aforementioned addiction...with a huge push in that direction from adverts and such....one thing i would say is you can snack as long as you don't overindulge at any point...my philosophy is eat when you're hungry, and only until you are no longer hungry (not until you are stuffed)...i went from 260lbs to 190 lbs applying this principle mixed with running, light circuit training, and lots of basketball (only took 14 months...not that long in the scheme of things...oh, I'm 6'4" to add further perspective)
